Volunteer Opportunities
The Coppell Community Garden, an all volunteer run organization, is successful because of the many volunteers who have joined in the effort to build community and healthy living in Coppell. The volunteers have learned, planned, and worked with one another to develop a system of transformation for each individual involved throughout the larger community. Annually the organization logs nearly 9,000 volunteer hours.
Adopt a Plot
Adopt a Plot – Volunteer gardeners adopt a raised bed to grow all organic produce for our local food pantry that serves Carrollton, Farmers Branch, and Coppell residents in need. Volunteer gardeners learn about organic gardening practices and the various crops/varieties that do well in North Texas. Guidance is provided by garden leadership and crops are typically planted either as seeds or as transplants. If interested, get more detailed information from our Gardener Playbook and complete the Adopt a Plot Registration form. Once you complete the form, the Garden Manager for the garden you select will send you an email to begin to discuss the opportunity in more detail.
Volunteer in Our Greenhouse
Grow Transplants – Volunteers start seeds, transplant seedlings to pots, water and fertilize seedlings, clean and maintain the greenhouse, wash and sterilize pots and trays, and support the effort to hold a yearly plant sale at the Coppell Farmers Market. If interested, please complete the Greenhouse Registration form. Our Greenhouse Manager will contact you to arrange to discuss the opportunity in more detail.
Handyman
Running three gardens and a greenhouse requires routine maintenance work by someone with a knowledge of plumbing, a bit of woodworking, an understanding of mechanical systems, and general handyman skills so as to be able to fix things that are broken and perform routine maintenance at the greenhouse. This person might also be tasked with picking up donated items (coffee grounds and/or produce) weekly from retailers in Coppell that will go into our compost piles. They might also be asked to serve as a point person for scout projects that need extra oversight at the request of a Garden Manager. If interested email info@coppellcommunitygarden.org to inquire about openings and apply.
Youth Volunteer Coordinator
Manage Youth Volunteers – Do you like working with our youth and teaching them about how to maintain a vegetable garden and general sustainable gardening practices? Join us if you can be available on most Saturday mornings to be the point person when youth arrive to earn their community service hours. Provide leadership, oversight, and encouragement to inspire them to become future organic gardeners. If interested email info@coppellcommunitygarden.org to inquire about openings and apply.
Youth Action!
Would you like to work outside, learn a bit about gardening, and get community service hours? Come be a Youth Action volunteer at the gardens and make a difference! Volunteers can learn about horticulture, landscaping, sustainable gardening, organic methods, entomology, organic pest management, and much more. Wear old shoes, dress for the weather; bring gloves and water to drink. If you have a designated volunteer form you are required to have signed, bring it as well.
Join us Saturday mornings from 8:30 am – 10:30 am at our Ground Delivery Garden. Sign in and check in with the Volunteer Coordinator when you arrive. The address is 450 S. Denton Tap Road (by the Coppell Post Office). Sign in by the shed.
Youth on the CCG Board
The Coppell Community Garden Board has two youth positions. The term is for one year beginning in September through August. These positions are for those who are interested in being environmentally conscientious, want a responsible role to develop leadership skills, and to connect with other youth and adult community leaders. If interested, please contact your faculty member responsible for your Coppell school garden.
